Choosing a Fishing Rod

Plugs

Plugs are artificial lures, which can be made of plastic, wood or metal. Plugs come in all different shapes and sizes they resemble dead or injured fish. It is retrieved in the same way as a spinner, except instead of spinning they swim or wobble through the water.

Plugs normally fall into 4 different categories. There are surface lures, shallow divers, sinkers and deep divers. Try to buy a complete range of plugs for your fishing tackle box, this way you’ll have one for each specific job.

Floating Plugs

Floating plugs are light and have a wedge inserted in the nose. They are designed to mimic a surface swimming fish in distress.

Shallow Diving Plugs

They have a lightweight body with a diving nose. They lie on the surface and when you retrieve them the diving under the surface. The faster you retrive the deeper the plug dives.

Sinking Plugs

These Plugs sink when first cast and then rise higher in the water the faster you retrive them.

Deep Diving Plugs

These plugs float when you cast them. They have a large diving nose, when retrieving this drags against the water causing the plug to dive quickly.

Spinners

A spinner has a blade, which rotates quickly about a straight axis. There are lots of variations of spinners, but they normally fall into 3 different categories.

Bar Spoons

They have a wire axis around which spins an egg-shaped blade which is attached at one end.

Minnows

These lures probably look most like actual fish. The body is round and minnow like in profile. The head has a pair of vanes, which cause it to rotate. It has a treble hook on its tail.

Buzzer or Spinnertail

This lure has a 'Y' shaped bar of wire with a fluttering spoon on one arm and a hook, weight and colourful skirt on the other. Although they don’t look like fish they can be very successful, they should be a part of every lure fisherman’s tackle box.
